Canon Abilities: Helaena is a Targaryen, which gives her the ability to bond with and command dragons, and her being bonded to the dragon Dreamfyre makes her a dragon rider, although she doesn’t ride much. She’s also a dreamer, constantly plagued by prophetic visions and known for eccentric mutterings that are related to things that are going to happen. And her innate resistance to poisons and illnesses comes with being a Targaryen.

1. Has your character always believed in magic? Do they have something influencing their perspective on the supernatural/metaphysical/spiritual from their past? How do they feel about magic?
Yes, Helaena has. Helaena DOES. Magic is baked into Westeros, is a part of it, although it might not be so obvious or so open at times. Magic is all around Helaena. Her family has DRAGONS. She, herself, is a dragon rider and has bonded with a dragon named Dreamfyre. Her family (the Targaryen half, anyway) is known for that connection to dragons, and thus to magic, because it’s rumoured that dragons have a strong connection to magic themselves. They put dragon eggs in their babies cribs with them in the hopes that they will hatch and bond with the child. That bond between dragon and rider is important.

It’s in her blood. She’s what’s known as a dreamer, and she’s plagued by prophetic visions. It doesn’t mean that she doesn’t have complicated feelings about magic. About her abilities. What she sees. What she knows. It doesn’t always change anything. It doesn’t help her be any less eccentric or peculiar, either. If they’d only listen to her. If they only understood.

2. What mythological creature would your character most like to be? Which do they identify with? Which would they dread being? Feel free to use our Bestiary for reference.
The cliché answer all around is dragon. It’s hard to avoid, given her family, who she is. But Helaena, the eccentric, peculiar Targaryen, despite being a Targaryen, and a dragon rider at that, would want nothing more than to be a spider. She’s always had an affinity with bugs and other creepy crawlies, being found holding a millipede, or trying to catch a spider in a shell. She even has little wicker cages of them in a room in the castle. Despite being able to appear as a fashionable human, she would no doubt prefer to appear in her spider form, were she to be one. Or else something like the lawkapatim or landvaettir. Something that brings luck and good fortune. Something helpful. Something kind.

As far as what she would most identify with would be the qilin. Peaceful and bringing good fortune, although she doesn’t think she does. But peaceful. Oh yes. Peace would be WONDERFUL.

The creature she would most dread being, would be any that bring harm, or death. She doesn’t want to burn anyone. The same would go for being a mythical creature. She doesn’t want to harm anyone. She would HATE being something that harmed others.

3. If your character could ask for one wish, and it's going to be magically granted without any consequence, what will it be and why?
If Helaena could be granted one wish, without consequence… it would probably be to not become queen. She was happier before she was queen. Far happier when she was just… Helaena Targaryen. Aegon isn’t the best husband, although she does make the best of it. When he’s drunk is bad enough, but she would rather he not turn his attention to her at all. Let him ignore her all the time.

It would have been better for her to be wed to Aemond. Or not wed at all. To continue to just be Helaena. If she could have that, without consequence, it would be her dearest wish. Even though she knows better. Even if it came without consequence it would still have consequences. It’s tradition for Targaryen’s to marry each other, and that’s why her mother pushed her marriage to Aegon. Her mother would be disappointed. Unless somehow Aemond was king instead, making her still queen. Her mother might be less disappointed, then. It would still be fulfilling family tradition. The best choice would have been to be wed to Jacaerys, though. It would have united both halves of House Targaryen, perhaps kept the schism from growing to what it is.

4. If there's one person your character would follow to another realm, who would it be and why? If there's no one, state that and explain why.
If there was one person, out of all the people Helaena knows and loves, in either half of her family, that she would follow to another realm, it would most likely be her brother, Aemond. They were close as children, closer than siblings, nearly twins. She loved him the most and feels safer with him more than anyone else. They share a connection, an affinity for each other. He’s more tuned into her than anyone. It’s why she can say things to him, to his face, that would get anyone else dead by his hand. Except her. He won’t kill her. She knows him, and she loves him.

But there are places she would never follow him, though. Paths she cannot follow him down. Because she won’t burn anyone, she refuses to burn anyone, she doesn’t want to use her dragon Dreamfyre as a weapon. She won’t follow him there; she refuses to follow him there.

To another realm? That she would do easily. Without question.
